If you can't take on a job or supply a product, would you refer the customer to a competitor?

A client just called me with an urgent deadline that I couldn't meet. Instead, I referred them to someone else who I knew had the time. The other person does very good work, and their services are identical to my own. Assuming you don't have the bandwidth to take on their work or supply a product when they need it, is it better to help the customer by pointing them in the direction of a competitor, realizing that you might never see them again? An alternative to this would be if you had a relationship with a direct competitor, wherein they refer clients/customers to you when they can't take them on and vice versa. Isn't this beneficial to everyone in the long run?

I’ve spent $400 so far on google ads and I haven’t seen much results yet. Is this something that just takes time and I should stick with? The title pretty much says it. I'm in college full time, but with online schooling, you can't really call it full time. I worked painting for a few summer breaks and know my way around a ladder.
