Changes in how homes are designed (open floor plans, larger rooms and higher ceilings) have also changed the chemical composition of the fire and greatly increased the speed at which it grows.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1932, Hattie Wyatt Caraway, a Democrat from Arkansas, became the first woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate. Later that year, Caraway was elected for a full six-year term with the support of powerful Louisiana senator, Huey Long. And in 1938, she was reelected. Although she was the first freely elected female senator, Caraway was preceded in the Senate by Rebecca Latimer Felton of Georgia, who was appointed in 1922 to fill a vacancy but never ran for election and only served a single day in office.

Meet the Common Bronzewing (Phaps chalcoptera)! This pigeon is widespread across Australia, where it lives in a variety of habitats including forests, deserts, and savannas. Structural coloration, rather than pigmentation, is the reason the plumage on its wings has an iridescent effect. What’s unique about its vibrant feathers is the range of color displayed on individual barbs; typically only one color is seen per barb. Photo: Donald Hobern, CC BY 2.0, flickr
