The FBI has publicly acknowledged for the first time that it is considering keeping those who attacked the US Capitol last week from boarding planes by adding them to the federal no-fly list. Congressional leaders have called for keeping rioters off planes. "We cannot allow these same insurrectionists to get on a plane and cause more violence, and more damage," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Tuesday. (📸: Alex Edelman/AFP/Getty Images)

Galaxies die when the stars that live in them stop forming. Now, for the first time, astronomers have witnessed this phenomenon in a distant galaxy (shown in the illustration above). The galaxy, known as ID2299, ejected almost half the gas it uses to form stars, according to a study published Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy. It's possible that this galaxy’s demise was caused by a collision with another galaxy because it has a tidal tail, which is a long stream of gas and stars that extend out into space after two galaxies come together in a collision. (📸: M. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), the third-ranking member of House Republican leadership, said Tuesday that she will vote to impeach Trump after he incited last week’s riot at the U.S. Capitol. “The president could have immediately and forcefully intervened to stop the violence,” Cheney said in a statement. “He did not. There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States to his office and his oath to the Constitution.” “I will vote to impeach the President,” Cheney said.

Follow ➡️ cnnclimate ➡️ US carbon emissions fell 10.3% in 2020 because of the pandemic, preliminary estimates by the Rhodium Group show. But the dip came at a great economic cost — and experts warn emissions will bounce back quickly unless climate action becomes a priority. It's not just the US — Global Carbon Project estimates that emissions of heat-trapping gases decreased by around 7% globally last year. That might look like a significant drop, but it won't make any meaningful difference to climate change. Carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere for centuries, and last year's decline is little more than a blip on the graph. Tap the link in our bio to learn more. (📸: Mark J. Terrill/AP)

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has announced that he will not “move forward” with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which he was scheduled to receive from President Donald Trump on Thursday. "Recently, I was offered the opportunity to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which I was flattered by out of respect for what the honor represents and admiration for prior recipients," Belichick said in a statement. "Subsequently, the tragic events of last week occurred and the decision has been made not to move forward with the award. Above all, I am an American citizen with great reverence for our nation's values, freedom and democracy." As of January 11, at least 50 countries are rolling out Covid-19 vaccines (shown above in blue). An estimated 70-90% of the world's 7.8 billion people would need to receive the vaccine before achieving the so-called "herd immunity" required for people to return to normal life, Dr. Anthony Fauci has said. Most of the vaccines require two doses per person, which means distributing roughly 10 to 14 billion doses — a logistical challenge the likes of which the world has never seen.
