At 2:20 am on #ThisDayInHistory in 1912, The British ocean liner, Titanic, sunk into the North Atlantic Ocean about 400 miles south of Newfoundland, Canada. Because of the shortage of lifeboats and lack of satisfactory emergency procedures, more than 1,500 people went down in the sinking ship or froze in the icy waters. More than half of the 700 or so survivors were women and children. To read more about the Titanic, visit the link in our bio.

The ‘Titanic's final hours are what made it forever famous, but there's something captivating about the images of the ship from before the wreck. When looking at relics from the days when the ocean liner was still considered virtually unsinkable, it's hard not to think about the dark fate awaiting it. That's very much the effect of the eerie video at the link in our bio. #Titanic110 #accessibility text: Photo of the 'Titanic' afloat with text that reads: Watch the Only Surviving Footage of the Titanic Before Its Doomed Voyage

75 years ago, on #ThisDayInHistory, Jackie Robinson, age 28, became the first Black American player in Major League Baseball. On this day, he broke the color barrier in a sport that had been segregated for more than 50 years. In 1949, the right-hander was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player and the league batting champ. He played on the National League All-Star team from 1949 through 1954 and led the Dodgers to six National League pennants and one World Series victory, in 1955. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962, his first year of eligibility. Despite his talent and success as a player, Robinson faced tremendous racial discrimination throughout his career, from baseball fans and some fellow players. In 1997, his groundbreaking career was honored and his uniform number, 42, was retired from Major League Baseball. To read more about Jackie Robinson, visit the link in our bio.
