Grace Hopper coined the term "computer bug" after finding a moth stuck inside Harvard's Mark II computer in 1947 (which in turn led to the term "debug," meaning solving problems in computer code). She did the foundational work that led to the COBOL programming language, used in mission-critical computing systems for decades (including today). She worked in World War II using very early computers to help end the war. When she retired from the U.S. Navy at age 79, she was the oldest active-duty commissioned officer in the service. Historians believe William Shakespeare was likely born on #ThisDayInHistory in 1564, the same day he died in 1616. Considered by many to be the greatest Western playwright of all time, he has remained an elusive figure leaving behind no letters, no manuscripts, and only six signatures, all spelled differently.

At this moment, two gold-plated copper records are hurtling through space, speeding beyond our solar system. The Voyager 1 and 2 probes launched in 1977, and they’ve since traveled billions of miles from Earth. The purpose of NASA’s Voyager mission is to illustrate life on Earth to any intelligent aliens that come across the spacecraft. The records on board contain media selected by a committee chaired by scientist Carl Sagan. These are the sounds and images the Voyager Golden Record committee chose to represent Earth to intelligent alien life. - Beethoven's Fifth Symphony - A Mandarin greeting. Translated to English, it says: "Hope everyone's well. We are thinking about you all. Please come here to visit when you have time." - Humpback Whale Songs - A photo of a traffic jam in Thailand Full list at the link in our bio.
