In the 12th century, Talatama, a king of Tonga, died and left no male heirs. His brother Talaihaʻapepe named a piece of wood Talatama’s son and, consequently, the new king. The ‘king’ died and his human wife ‘gave birth’ to a ‘son’ — Talaihaʻapepe who thus became the next king.
