Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed his country will be able to host Eurovision next year, following a poignant victory last night for folk-rap group Kalush Orchestra. Ukraine was crowned the winning nation after receiving 631 points from both public and jury votes, followed by the United Kingdom in second place – its first top three finish in 20 years. As the winning country traditionally takes on hosting duties for the following year’s contest, many people wondered whether or not Ukraine would be able to amid the Russian invasion. However, Zelenskyy has vowed to hold the event in Mariupol in 2023, having praised his country’s winning act in a Facebook post. He said: “Our courage impresses the world, our music conquers Europe! Next year Ukraine will host Eurovision! For the third time in its history. And I believe – not for the last time.”

Ukraine has won the 2022 Eurovision song contest. They were crowned victors having amassed 631 points from both public and jury votes 👏 🇺🇦 Rap group Kalush Orchestra represented the war-torn country with their song Stefania. This came after the United Kingdom won the jury vote, with the country's strongest finish in decades courtesy of Sam Ryder and his song Space Man. They finished with 466 points after the public votes were counted, coming second behind Ukraine. The contest comes with the backdrop of war in Europe for the first time since Second World War, after Russia invaded Ukraine in March of this year. Extraordinarily, members of Kalush Orchestra were actually fighting on the frontline in the Ukraine war before being given special permission to compete in Eurovision 😮

Giles Kelch, from Faversham, was left up in arms after he was charged what he saw as a ridiculous amount for dropping a cigarette butt. Whether you smoke like a chimney or you can't stand the smell, £150 for dropping a cigarette butt seems a bit steep. Still, that's what the IT worker was charged when he was spotted dropping a stub on the ground in the Swale borough. "How can you possibly charge £150 for dropping a cigarette butt, which was subsequently picked up and put in a bin? It has hardly ruined the whole of Swale. They are doing this in 2022, with costs and energy prices rising." The council's response didn't help either, with Kelch adding: “Their take was if you’re walking around and there are no bins, you wait until you get home and stick it in the bin. “There are only bins in the town centre, but once you come out of it, there is nothing.” So, basically, if you don't want to receive a ridiculous fine, don't smoke in Swale.
