Sen. Bernie Sanders has raised $1.8 million for charity through the sale of merchandise inspired by the viral photo of him and his mittens on Inauguration Day. The Vermont senator's team began selling sweatshirts and T-shirts featuring the photo, which inspired countless memes, on his campaign store last Thursday. All the money raised will be distributed to several charities in his home state of Vermont, according to the release. "Jane and I were amazed by all the creativity shown by so many people over the last week, and we're glad we can use my internet fame to help Vermonters in need," Sanders said. President Biden shared a kiss with first lady Jill Biden before boarding Marine One to visit wounded troops at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Friday. As he departed the White House, Biden reminisced about the time he had spent there as a patient while serving in the Senate and as a visitor while serving as vice president. “I’ve been at Walter Reed a lot,” Biden said. “I spent almost six months there myself as a patient. And in addition to that, as vice president, every single Christmas, we spent all of Christmas Day at Walter Reed.” In February 1988, as a senator representing Delaware, Biden was taken by ambulance to Walter Reed for surgery to correct a brain aneurysm. A subsequent surgery and recuperation kept him there more than six months. Biden told reporters the patients he plans to see Friday are “real heroes.” Read more by clicking the link in our bio. Merriam-Webster added "second gentleman" to its dictionary on Thursday, defining the term as, "the husband or male partner of a vice president or second in command of a country or jurisdiction." Vice President Kamala Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff, who severed all ties with his Los Angeles law firm on inauguration day and will be teaching entertainment law at Georgetown, said he will devote time as second gentleman to social justice issues and other projects in support of the Biden administration. Emhoff tweeted the day after the inauguration that he is looking to his predecessors in the role for inspiration. "I'll always remember generations of women have served in this role before me — often without much accolade or acknowledgment. It's their legacy of progress I will build on as Second Gentleman," he wrote. (📸: Win McNamee/Getty Images)
