A second Statue of Liberty, sent by France, will be erected on Ellis Island, just across the water from the original, from July 1 to July 5. This new bronze figure, nicknamed the “little sister,” is one-sixteenth the size of the world-famous one that stands on Liberty Island. “We want to send a very simple message: Our friendship with the United States is very important, particularly at this moment,” said Olivier Faron, general administrator of the National Museum of Arts and Crafts. The Biden administration is buying 500 million doses of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine to donate to the world, as the United States dramatically increases its efforts to help vaccinate the global population, according to three people familiar with the plans. President Biden is slated to announce the plan at the G-7 meeting in Britain this week amid growing calls for the United States and other rich countries to play a more substantial role in boosting the global supply of vaccines. Last week, the White House detailed plans for how it would allocate 25 million doses, with about 19 million of them being shared with Covax, the World Health Organization-backed initiative to distribute vaccine doses around the globe. Roughly 6 million doses would be shared directly with countries experiencing severe coronavirus outbreaks, including India. Read more through the link in our bio.

From guardian_sport: England’s vice-captain Jordan Henderson says fans booing players for taking the knee achieves nothing and only proves the fight against racism is far from over. There were jeers before England played Austria and Romania in recent friendlies at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough, and there are fears the dispute will rumble on when Gareth Southgate’s side meet Croatia in their Euro 2020 opener at Wembley on Sunday. Yet the backlash will not stop England players taking the knee. “It shows even more that we have to keep going, keep fighting it. From our side, it’s about being together and doing what we think is right,” says Henderson. “We’ve made it very clear that we all stand together against racism. That’s the reason that we continue to take the knee." #England #football #sport #sports #Euro2020 #racism #threelions

🇮🇪 "There are other developments inside the EU which are not to the Irish public’s taste. "The growing demand, especially by Germany, for a common foreign policy based on majority voting in the European Council, a push for greater militarisation of the EU, and Ireland’s growing net contribution to the EU budget will all place a strain on the traditional Irish pro-EU sentiment" Read more at the link in bio #brexit #ireland #uk #EU #brussels #germany

In the United States, life is returning to normal. That’s all for good reason: A majority of Americans have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, and daily new infections and deaths are at their lowest levels in almost a year. The pandemic is slowly receding from the daily lives of many Americans as businesses open up and local authorities ease restrictions. But the pandemic is hardly in retreat elsewhere. The emergence of more virulent variants of the virus in countries like Brazil and India and the slowness of vaccination efforts in many places outside the West have contributed to deadly new waves. Public health advocates and international organizations recognize the main problem: The global gap in vaccinations. For more, click the link in our bio.
