How does NASA know so much about distant planets?

I was watching a video about the scariest planets in the universe, and the guy was going into immense detail about planets light years away. There is this one planet called HD 189733 b where it rains molten glass sideways. Even the wind speed of it is known. How is NASA able to figure this stuff out?
