Glenn Ligon’s ‘Warm Broad Glow II,’ 2011, is now on view at the Glenstone Museum in Potomac. The work references a passage from Gertrude Stein’s 1909 book ‘Three Lives,’ wherein the writer describes ‘the wide, abandoned laughter that makes the warm broad glow of negro sunshine.’ Ligon has said of the series, ’Everyone understands the literal meanings of the words “negro sunshine” but what do they mean in the artwork? I am interested in that ambiguity.
I am interested in how race, politics, identity, sexuality, history, and other things interact. In particular, I am interested in how the past intrudes into the present.’ Photos: Paul Tukey glennligon glenstonemuseum #GlennLigon #Glenstone #WarmBroadGlow #NegroSunshine

A mysterious group of ancient monuments first discovered in Saudi Arabia in the 1970s, known as mustatials, predate the first Egyptian pyramids and Stonehenge by over 2,000 years, making them the world’s oldest ritual landscape, archaeologists now say: https://t.co/ASNNLsA03j https://t.co/zSm41sxDow

30 years ago an exhibition of Amish quilts in Tokyo inspired #TomieNagano to make quilts to honor her ancestors. Using kimono worn by her grandparents, she created Log Cabin quilts from her studio in the US, transforming this “American” pattern into a mosaic of color. #AAPIMonth https://t.co/YzfZdg91nm
