Baby Steps to Private Practice?

Hello! I wanted to know if anyone has any feedback on what I'm attempting to do. I have a niche skillset (assistive technology for speech disabilities - think someone needs a setup like Stephen Hawking - I can assess for and implement that) that I'd like to start consulting out for. Eventually, I'd like to have my own private practice (which would probably need to be broader, I get that), but I'm not ready to take that risk on at this point. I'm the sole earner in our family, and if things went south then I'd be responsible for more than just me. I currently have a full time job in a local school district doing what I'm proposing to consult for. My thinking is that with enough consulting practice/experience, I'd gain the knowledge and experience for that leap. Does this make sense or am I just being too conservative with my risk tolerance? Thanks!
