Bryan Johnson made a fortune in online payment processing. He's spent a lot of it building hardware meant to radically expand science's understanding of the brain. Over the next few weeks, his company, Kernel, will begin sending dozens of customers a $50,000 helmet that can analyze the brain’s electrical impulses and blood flow. Crudely speaking, it can read your mind — all via a wearable device, rather than a room-size machine. As a leading figure in the so-called quantified-self movement, Johnson has had just about every cell in his body repeatedly analyzed by a team of experts. Doctors monitoring his efforts, which have included experiments with psychedelics and snorting stem cells, say his 43-year-old body functions like one a decade younger. What can his helmet add to the equation? Link in bio for the full story. (via businessweek)

Anyone had to close or shut down their business that has ran well for a couple of years before? What happened afterwards?

I know this probably isn't a the topic that many would wanna talk about. But I'd like to hear some thoughts on how do y'all cope with shuttering a business and calling it quits after it has ran it's course. I've ran a business for around 4 years now, it's been comfy and we had around 4 profitable years so far, but as competition starts to pop up all around us and our sales numbers drastically dropping, we might actually need to start thinking about doing the inevitable soon. It hurts to think about it frankly, since I've basically poured 4 years of hard work into this. But I'd like to hear how did y'all cope with it and how did things work out afterwards. Will finding a job be hard? As much as I'd like to think the skills are transferable, I don't really have much in my resume right now.

Advice for a new single-person small contracting remodeling and roofing company?

I have been doing this type of work for the past six years and know it well. I have started to realize that it will be a lot more profitable for me to start my own small contracting company instead of working for someone else. I am just looking for some general adivce on starting my own company that other people have learned from experience. I am not looking to grow this business and hire employees for at least a few years. Just plan to contract small jobs that can be done all by myself. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Opening an art based small business

Where do I begin with my small business? How much money do you recommend having saved first (i’ll explain the business briefly so you can get an idea of upfront cost) and what are the best small business loans? Ideally I would find a location to fit what i’d be doing but if there was renovation needed it could be done by my husband and I. We would also be able to build the necessary tables and shelves and install them ourselves. other furniture we don’t build could be purchased from ikea. There would be necessary art supplies to start which could get really pricey. I would look into sellers for businesses to see if they would be cheaper. Neither of us have a background in business. I know some basics of marketing due to selling online but would be looking to outsource most things involving the business side of things This is a goal of mine in the next few years and i want to start planning and learning how to actually achieve this. any information would be greatly appreciated!

The steel industry generates more CO2 than cars, buses and motorbikes — combined. It's also the same industry making wind turbines and solar panels. Can the industry move from cheap coal to more costly green steel technologies? https://t.co/ilyVOuQO6G
