Divers use floating plastic bags to remove an abandoned fishing net that was covering a coral reef in a protected area of Ko Losin, a small rocky islet in the southern waters of the Gulf of Thailand, June 20, 2021.   A group of volunteer divers and the Coastal Resources Research Center, assisted by the Royal Thai Navy, removed these "ghost" nets that were covering coral reefs in a two-day operation that ended Sunday. The process revealed long lines of coral bleaching.   “Ghost nets are a big problem in Thailand," said a diver from the volunteer SOS group, Wannapa Thammasangwan. 📷 jgesilva #coral #underwater #reuters #reutersphotos #nature #environment

I am working on starting a card and video game store.

Here is my math. Am I missing anything? Rent 2600 already built out Free shelving, ~2k for display cases one time Electric and gas 400 max Water and sewer 75 Business Insurance 150 Internet + phone 100 Pos system ~1500 one time purchase Pos system $40 a month and 2.3% +10c per transaction Pay for me 2000 Total 5365, rounded up to 5500/month Assuming 30% profit on sales, sale goal would be 18.33k (call it 20k) minimum per month to break even on the business Need around 25k estimated in inventory to start. Minimum 3 months of operating costs in the bank, I would need 16.5k + starting inventory would be around ~44k to open a store

State Unemployment Office Called to See if Person Had Applied with Us?

Today, an unknown caller stating they were with my state unemployment office called our business. The unknown caller said she was verifying an unemployment job search, and wanted to know if a named person had applied with us. Is this standard procedure in most states? I see no way to verify the caller's identity as a rep for the unemployment office, but I also see no reason applicant names should be confidential (obviously details of any application would be confidential). An online search finds that employment verification calls are SOP, but I can't find information on applicant verification calls. Any advice or experience in this?

Natural-gas prices are starting the summer air-conditioning season nearly twice as high as they were a year ago. Demand for the fuel is picking up as the world’s economies reopen and as Americans dial down their thermostats for what is expected to be a hot summer. Meanwhile, U.S. producers have stuck to the skimpy drilling plans they sketched out when prices were lower, eliminating the glut that was keeping them depressed. Go to the link in our bio for more on this story.

Checklist for new LLC taxed as S Corp

I am looking for a step by step checklist of things that need to be done after electing S corp status for a LLC. The LLC was created just a few weeks before the S corp election. I'm confused on a number of points. The IRS hasn't "approved" (not sure if that's the right terminology) the S corp election and I understand it will take quite some time for them to do so as they're backed up, but I understand that taxes can be filed as a S corp retroactive to the official start date of the LLC. Should I already make estimated tax payments for the LLC's EIN number? Will I need a new EIN once the S corp election officially goes through? Alternatively, if someone can recommend a quality CPA who charges reasonable rates, that would be helpful. I'm not really partial to taking the DIY approach.

Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney are killed by a Ku Klux Klan mob near Meridian, Mississippi. The three young civil rights workers were working to register Black voters in Mississippi, thus inspiring the ire of the local Klan. The deaths of Schwerner and Goodman, white Northerners and members of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), caused a national outrage. #kkk #civilrights #usa #america #blacklivesmatter #racism #black #blackrights

Is there a free service to help calculate sales tax rates?

I know you can pay for standalone services or pay for an online store which calculates sales tax for you, but is there a free way to get the same information? It seems to me that all of the information needed to calculate sales tax rates is public and some states even have a calculator to help you figure it out for free on their websites. Is there a service which aggregates this information?

Startup costs?

A partner and I are looking to open a stand alone personal training and physical therapy business. Would start with personal training while working on getting insurance contracts eventually for physical therapy but that would be 1-2 years down the road. Obviously this is a complex and loaded question but I'm looking for a ballpark number for a 6 and 12 month runway. I'd like to limit outside investment if possible but don't even know what costs to estimate yet outside of office lease and insurance. The partner is all sweat equity and I'm the purse for the most part. Also, any info resource recommendations are welcome.

How many of you do your own marketing? And for those of you that do, are you creating your own ad graphics or do you hire a graphic designer?

Also how often do you make ads for your products?

Best POS/inventory system for a small music store?

hi guys, I just started helping out at this music store and, long story short, the owner is still writing receipts by hand and doesn't have much of an inventory system to speak of...at all.... I'd really like to help him modernize with a POS system and also inventory management, something that lets you scan bar codes and collects that data as inventory. I just ordered a barcode scanner but currently have no idea what POS system to use. He has a TON of books and scanning the barcodes alone is going to take a long time so I was hoping to find a system that was great with inventory management and scanning barcodes. Any advice or tips is greatly appreciated! Totally new to this... the only retail experience I have is in grocery stores with already established and very complicated scanning/sale systems, lol.

Office Manager Issues

I really need so business owner insight here. My family and I own a CPA firm that is transitioning from small to midsized. In the past decade we grew quite a bit, but I keep having to jump in as the office manager. The current manager I have seemed okay for a while. However more and more I am coming to terms with the following issues: 1. Staff is complaining to me about him 2. I am having to followup with him constantly 3. I feel like he is over delegating and work doesn’t get completed under him 4. He yells at the staff 5. I am having to fight fires everyday 6. The team is inefficient and unorganized. 7. After 2 years he doesn’t understand basics about our business 8. He is restive with my father and myself What do you have you office manager do? Do you still have to manage them or intervene? I’m getting to a place where I need to let him go, but this has been a cycle for the past 6 years, with a new manager every 2 years.

Trading high interest debt for a LOC with a one-time-fee

Hello. I have an opportunity to open a business line-of-credit with zero interest for 12-months, which I would be using to pay down debt that I currently have on a high-interest business credit card. The One Time Fee to open the LOC is %15 of the funded amount. I think the 15% is worth the cost, because I can roll that into the total debt and then set up a plan to pay it off over the 0% intro period (after that the interest rate on the LOC goes up to around %5-%12). My question is, is this 15% a typical cost for a business line of credit? My business is 2-3 years old and I have excellent personal credit (700+ across the three credit bureaus). Thank you.
