Ever wondered why we say flip flop and not flop flip? In phrases made of repeated words that change the interior vowel, such as chit chat, dilly dally or bish bash bosh, the vowels almost always go in the order I then A then O (or I then A or O if there are only two words).

In 2014, construction workers at Victoria tube station dashed to supermarkets to buy as many bags of sugar as they could carry. They poured the sugar over a concrete spillage to slow down its drying time, allowing them to clear the damage and reopen the station within a night.

In the early 1900s the British Museum’s cat, Black Jack, was accidentally locked in the Reading Room and shredded the covers of rare and valuable bound newspapers. A 1964 pamphlet said “this brought down upon him the wrath of the officials, and he was banished from the Library”.
