Need a hand? The spotted handfish (Brachionichthys hirsutus) might be able to lend one!👋 Its name is a reference to two of its signature traits: its fins, which it uses to “crawl” across the seafloor, and its spotted pattern, which is unique to each individual. This rare species of Australian anglerfish was common until the mid-1980s but has been greatly reduced in number due in part to an invasive seastar species and destruction of its habitat. Today, spotted handfish are considered critically endangered and only known to exist around the waters of Tasmania.
