Happy #FathersDay! ⚾ - with jeopardy. #accessibility text: Photo of a baseball mitt holding a baseball on a baseball field with text below that reads: On September 14, 1990, Ken Griffey, Sr. and Ken Griffey, Jr.—both players on the Seattle Mariners—made history by becoming the first father-son duo to hit back-to-back home runs in a major league baseball game.

Ever seen the Northern Lights — either in a photo or in person? Well, did you know that dazzling display of colors is actually the result of solar storms? Solar storms like the one simulated here — because it's too hot to send a probe to the sun! — are huge clouds of particles that erupt from the sun. And the solar winds they produce don't just create amazing light shows. They can also disrupt satellite telecommunications, navigation systems and even electric power! That's why it's so important for scientists to study them so they can begin to predict them like the weather, says space physicist and TEDFellow Miho Janvier (mihojnvr). To learn more about her awesome job as a "solar storm chaser, visit the link in our bio. [Image Credit: NASA / SDO]

In the animal kingdom, few dads are as committed to their young as the Emperor Penguin. After the female lays a single egg, her nutritional reserves become depleted, so she promptly embarks on an extensive hunting trip, leaving her egg in the father’s care. To protect the egg from the Antarctic winter temperatures and brutal winds, a male balances the egg on his feet and tucks it in his brood pouch—a cozy pocket of skin at the base of his belly. The mother’s hunting trip can take up to two months. During this time, dad eats nothing but snow and hardly sleeps while enduring the abrasive elements and wind chills. The stakes are high: if the egg touches the ice, the chick will perish. Luckily, dad has plenty of dad-pals to keep him company! Father penguins famously huddle together while balancing their eggs in a grand display of teamwork. Photo: Christopher Michel, CC BY 2.0, flickr
