What bird is flightless, covered in deep blue and olive green plumage, and lives in New Zealand? Meet the South Island Takahe (Porphyrio hochstetteri)! This plump, ground-dwelling bird is the largest member of the family Railidae, which also includes coots and gallinules. The Takahe inhabits grassland on New Zealand’s South Island, where it mainly feeds on grasses. It was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1948!
