Where does the Guianan Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola rupicola)’s name come from? It’s a nod to its proclivity for building mud-and-stick nests on rocky outcrops in its habitat of damp, humid forests in South America. Males of the species have brilliant orange plumage and half-moon crests, which distinguish them from the less distinctive, gray females. Courtship rituals may include a call that has been compared to the sound of squeezing a rubber duck! Although it’s a snowy scene, today’s Exhibit of the Day takes place on an August day at midnight in Denali National Park, Alaska. Camouflaged against the snow, Dall sheep thrive where few mammals can—above the tree line on windy peaks in Alaska and northwest Canada. Given their forbidding home, the three rams depicted can afford to relax for a moment.
