Edward Martell dropped out of school in Michigan aged 17 and ended up getting involved in dealing drugs. He first arrived in Judge Bruce Morrow's courtroom in 2005 after being arrested in a drug bust, but instead of giving Martell a long prison sentence that could have lasted up to 20 years, Morrow gave him a challenge - complete three years of probation and come to the court as an executive. After completing probation and then graduating from law school at the University of Detroit Mercy on a full scholarship, and working as a clerk at the federal public defender's office in Washington DC, he went through the Michigan Bar exam in which Judge Morrow ended up vouching for him. Morrow attended his final confirmation hearing, handing him a handkerchief once the aspiring lawyer got teary.
