Joe Biden's inauguration gave the world many sources of joy yesterday, but perhaps one of the best was Bernie Sanders' outfit choice. A photo of the former presidential hopeful set social media ablaze with memes about his thick coat and mittens - made from repurposed sweaters and recycled plastic. The look was labelled by some as "Vermont dadcore". One tweet read: "Bernie dressed like the inauguration is on his to do list today but ain’t his whole day." The Senator's mittens have become an unexpected must-have fashion accessory, and the teacher who made and gifted them to Sanders has been inundated with requests from people trying to buy them. Asked about his outfit, Sanders told CBS News in an interview after the ceremony: “In Vermont, we dress warm – we know something about the cold. We’re not so concerned about good fashion. We want to keep warm. And that’s what I did today.” How would you caption Bernie's look? Follow guardian_us for more

"I think the fact that the three of us are standing here talking about a peaceful transfer of power speaks to the institutional integrity of our country," said former US President George W. Bush. He was joined by former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton to share a message of unity in honor of Biden's inauguration.

Follow ➡️ cnnclimate ➡️ Hours after he was sworn in, President Joe Biden announced the US plans to reenter the Paris climate accord, the landmark international agreement signed in 2015 to limit global warming, in a sign of Biden's urgency to address the climate crisis. The US abandoned the agreement late last year on then-President Donald Trump's orders. Experts say that rejoining the agreement is a significant step by the Biden administration to reverse the climate policies of the last four years. President Joe Biden is directing the Department of Education Wednesday to extend the suspension of federal student loan payments and interests, extending the already unprecedented pause on payments by eight months. Progressive Democrats are already putting the pressure on Biden to go bigger and cancel billions of dollars in student loan debt altogether. During his campaign, Biden called for canceling $10,000 per borrower. Biden did not include any student debt cancellation in a $1.9 trillion relief plan he unveiled last week. (📸: Jim Watson/AFP/Getty Images)
