For 112 years, a 30-foot obelisk erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy stood outside a courthouse in Decatur, Georgia. That structure was finally taken down last year. And in its place, officials now plan to erect a monument that honors John Lewis, the late US congressman who spent his entire life fighting for civil rights. (📸: Chandan Khanna/AFP/Getty Images)

Amanda Gorman, the nation's first-ever youth poet laureate, will recite an original poem before the Super Bowl on Feb. 7, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced this week. Gorman's poem will highlight three individuals the NFL will honor as honorary captains at the Super Bowl: educator Trimaine Davis, nurse manager Suzie Dorner and veteran James Martin who Goodell said “have exemplified the essence of leadership." The 22-year-old youth poet laureate read a poem, "The Hill We Climb," at President Biden's inauguration earlier this month. (📸: Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images)

Deng Pravatoudom won a $60 million jackpot using a set of numbers her husband dreamed about 20 years ago, Ontario Lottery and Gaming said Monday. The 57-year-old mother of two, who was laid off during the pandemic, emigrated from Laos to Canada in 1980 with her 14 siblings. “My husband and I have worked long hours as general laborers for over 40 years, trying to save what we could for our family … this money will certainly help make our lives much easier." Pravatoudom, who said she and her husband will first pay off their bills and help their children, also plans to buy herself some diamonds. (📸: Ontario Lottery and Gaming)
