Tennessee lawmakers introduced a bill last week that would allow a person to stop a pregnant woman from receiving an abortion, even in the case of rape of incest. The bill requires the petitioner to prove they are the biological father of the unborn child, but does not require DNA evidence — only a "voluntary acknowledgment of paternity," which is acceptable without the signature of the pregnant parent, the bill states. If passed by the Senate Judiciary Committee, the act would take effect on July 1. However, the 1992 case Planned Parenthood v. Casey, during which the Supreme Court ruled that states cannot require anyone seeking an abortion to inform their partners, could mean the bill is unconstitutional. After buying a camera from a pawn shop at age 25, Gordon Parks began snapping away. His images of life on Chicago’s South Side in the early 1940s earned him a job documenting rural poverty for the federal government. A 1948 photo essay about a Harlem gang leader landed him a gig as Life magazine’s first Black staff photographer. In the decades that followed, Parks traveled the US capturing images of the segregated South, the civil rights movement and famous figures like Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X. Parks is one of the Black pioneers we are celebrating during Black History Month. Swipe through to see some of his famous pictures. (📸: Everett/Shutterstock and Jack Shainman Gallery)
