US Marine veteran Trevor Reed is on his way home after being released from Russia, where officials said he was wrongfully detained since 2019. The State Department has previously declined to identify exactly how many Americans have been detained in Russia, but there are at least two high-profile prisoners who remain behind bars there: Paul Whelan and WNBA star Brittney Griner. Whelan, another former Marine, was first arrested at the end of 2018 and was accused of being an American spy. He was sentenced in 2020 to 16 years in prison. Griner was detained in February at an airport outside Moscow where officials said they found cartridges of hashish oil in her luggage. “We will continue to advocate for the rapid release of hostages and detainees using all tools available to the United States government,” the Reed family said. The US Food and Drug Administration has proposed a new rule to ban menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars. This could have a significant effect on the number of smokers, the FDA said.⁠ ⁠ About 18.6 million people smoke menthols in the US. That’s about 36% of all smokers, according to the FDA, and a disproportionate number are people of color.
