A Russian court on Thursday found the American basketball star Brittney Griner guilty of an attempt to smuggle illegal narcotics into Russia and sentenced her to nine years in a penal colony, according to her lawyers. The verdict ended a closely watched trial that her supporters say made her a pawn in a tense geopolitical showdown over the war in Ukraine. The verdict, virtually preordained in a legal system in which defendants are rarely acquitted, leaves Griner’s fate subject to diplomatic bargaining between Russia and the U.S. The countries have been discussing the possibility of a prisoner exchange that would bring Griner home from Russia, where she has been detained since mid-February. Before her sentencing, Griner said she had made an “honest mistake” in bringing hashish oil into Russia. Officials in Moscow had said that a verdict was a necessary precondition for a possible exchange. The U.S. maintains that she was wrongly detained, held by Russia as a bargaining chip.

The Transportation Department is proposing that airlines issue vouchers with no expiration date to passengers who catch the coronavirus or other communicable diseases and decide to cancel their travel plans, part of expansion of financial protections spurred by complaints from the pandemic’s early days. The department called for the change Wednesday in an extensive proposal to update airline refund rules. Under current rules, passengers are typically entitled to financial protection when the airline cancels or significantly changes their flight. And while airlines waived change fees for many kinds of tickets early in the pandemic, travelers have fewer legal protections when they decide not to use a ticket they have booked. Alex Jones, Under Questioning, Is Confronted With Evidence of Deception “You know what perjury is, right?” Mark Bankston, a lawyer for Sandy Hook parents, asked the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. In a brutal cross-examination during his defamation trial on Wednesday, Jones was presented with text messages from his own cellphone that his lawyers appeared to have accidentally sent to lawyers for Sandy Hook parents. The disclosure of the texts provided a striking capstone to the final day of testimony in a trial to determine how much Jones must pay the parents of a child who died in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., for broadcasting conspiracy theories that the shooting was a hoax and that the families were “actors.” The jury began deliberating late Wednesday. A massive volcano erupting close to a global travel hub, Iceland’s Keflavik Airport, led to close monitoring by officials and sparked fascination from people who ventured near the bright-orange lava flows despite warnings. The Fagradalsfjall volcano in southwest Iceland erupted 1:18 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, which urged people to stay away from the sparsely populated area on the Reykjanes Peninsula — though some still went up close to snap photographs with their children and fly drones. “I just made it to the volcano … My mind is completely blown, it’s crazy,” one onlooker told the Associated Press.

Inspired by the mental health toll that the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot took on first responders, the U.S. Senate passed a bill Monday night that creates a pathway for families of officers who die by suicide to access death benefits. The unanimous passage of the Public Safety Officer Support Act means it now heads to President Biden’s desk, following prolonged advocacy by the partners of multiple officers who were on duty at the Capitol during the Jan. 6 assault and died by suicide in the aftermath. The bill also would amend the federal Public Safety Officers’ Benefits Program to make it easier for officers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder linked to their work to access disability benefits. Just over a week ago — whatever some may claim in hindsight — many of us had never watched a woman’s football match, and only the most hardcore fans had heard of Alessia Russo. But then came the semi-final of the Women’s Euros where the English Lionesses thrashed Sweden 4-0, with Russo, brought on in the 57th minute, scoring one of the best goals of all time, a superb, no-look back-heel that “nutmegged” between the goalkeeper’s legs. The following morning, we were all Lioness superfans and she was a household name. Now the Lionesses’ 23-year-old super-sub wants to make the game better for everyone — and win more trophies. 🔗 For our full interview with alessiarusso99, click the link in our bio 📸 cmcandrewphoto for The Times 📍Taken at nedsclublondon
