Gun violence in the United States is a growing public health epidemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. And, from mass shootings to everyday attacks, this violence takes many forms. Mass shootings — often carried out with AR-15-style semiautomatic rifles — get most of the attention. Largely overlooked are the day-to-day handgun deaths attributable to domestic violence, crossfire from stray bullets, criminal acts, gang wars, personal disputes and, in many cases, suicides. Often lost in Second Amendment debates are the survivors who shoulder the burden of unimaginable pain and repercussions from being shot. Read more through the link in our bio.

🐶 Don't let your pooch fool you... puppy-dog eyes are a myth. Humans struggle to decipher their dogs’ facial expressions, scientists have found. People are good at spotting anger etched on a dog’s face, but terrible at seeing sadness, finds a new study at UCL. The name “puppy-dog eyes” has been wrongly adopted for what is actually a uniquely human pose. 🗣“‘Puppy-dog eyes’ are not an expression seen in dogs or puppies, but a cultural concept to signify a more shallow sadness or regret…” Prof Harris, Vice-Dean International of the UCL Brain Sciences division, told The Telegraph. 🔗Find out more about how well humans understand dogs’ facial expressions, at the link in bio. #dogs #scientificresearch #pets #emotions

Authorities in Norway have euthanized a walrus that had drawn crowds of spectators in the Oslo Fjord after concluding that it posed a risk to humans. The 1,320-pound female walrus, known affectionately as Freya, became a popular attraction in Norway in recent weeks, despite warnings from officials that people should refrain from getting close and posing for pictures with the massive marine mammal. Freya liked to clamber on small boats, causing damage to them. Walruses are protected and as recently as last month officials said they hoped Freya would leave of her own accord and that euthanasia would be a last resort. Tap link in bio for more.

For the past 41 years, fans of Ernest Hemingway have been throwing the writer one of the most unusual birthday parties around. Hundreds of people hold an annual look-alike contest in Key West, Florida, around July 21, competing for the title of “Papa.” Hemingway earned the nickname back in the 1930s when he lived on the island, writing in the morning and making merry in the evening. The gray-bearded contestants gather at the bar Sloppy Joe’s, boisterous joy filling the air as they show off their best Hemingway impressions, the crowd cheering, laughing, sharing bad jokes and bear hugs — all exhibiting Hemingway’s lust for life. Many wear traditional “running of the bulls” attire in an ode to Hemingway’s “The Sun Also Rises” and the parade down Duval Street in the center of town. From bytheway: Enter the buffer day. Prioritize scheduling an extra day off between when you return home from vacation and going back to work. Because let’s face it: While travel is a joy (and a luxury), it can be exhausting. Use the day to unpack, do laundry, run errands and take a bath — and recovering. Even on relaxing vacations, being out of your comfort zone for a few days and around so many people can be draining. You can use the buffer day to look ahead to the next. Or think of it as a mini staycation at the end of your vacation. A buffer day can be crucial after an active bachelorette-party weekend spent with lots of new people, a short trip with long flights to the West Coast, or an exhausting visit with family. It might not always be possible to build in a buffer day, but when you do, you’ll thank yourself later. 🔴 On 25 July 2011, Beth Alexander, a freelance teacher and lecturer, was in the soft play area of a department store in Austria. At that time, Beth would often go there to sit in the café and watch her twin sons, then aged two, play in the ball pond. Eighteen months earlier, the police had evicted her husband from the couple’s home under Austria’s Protection Against Violence Act. At around midday on that day in the play centre, Beth got a call from a social worker. "She said, 'Be home in half an hour. You’ve got to hand the boys over.'" In a dramatic U-turn, the judge had awarded Michael custody with immediate effect. After a decade-long fight, Beth’s latest bid to see her boys was rejected by the courts in November. 🔗Read Beth's full story at the link in our bio. #custodybattle #austria #domesticviolence

🔴Ukrainian artillery almost cut off Russia’s forces in the occupied city of Kherson after badly damaging three key bridges across the River Dnipro. Kyiv's forces have been pummelling a number of rail and road crossings over the waterway, and a local Ukrainian official reported on Saturday that they had damaged the last working bridge. Western intelligence said Russia was now only able to resupply its forces in the southern region using two pontoon ferry crossings. “With their supply chain constrained, the size of any stockpiles Russia has managed to establish on the west bank is likely to be a key factor in the force’s endurance,” the British Ministry of Defence said on Saturday. 🔗Read more about what this means at the link in bio. #ukraine #russia #war #kherson #zelensky #putin
