Metal bands have long embraced speed and defiance, two traits central to the “Well of Death,” a popular sideshow attraction at many Vijayadashami festivals. In the Hindu month of Ashvin, which falls in September or October on the Gregorian calendar, festivals break out across India and Nepal celebrating Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra. This beloved middle-finger-to-gravity started in the United States as the “Wall of Death” on Coney Island in 1911. It features daredevils on motorcycles and cars using the power of centrifugal force to drive on the near-vertical walls of the barrel-shaped wooden cylinder. Spectators often offer money to the motorists, who will grab the offerings as they drive around. Read more in the link in our bio. In his wrestling days, Dwayne Johnson played the bad guy. He’s ready to reprise that role again in “Black Adam,” the latest entry in the film franchise based on DC comic-book characters. Johnson is cast as the title character, a merciless superpowered adventurer from ancient times who finds himself revived in the present day. Using his awesome abilities — and a general lack of concern for human life — Black Adam sets about liberating his fictional homeland of Kahndaq from the criminal regime presently running it. It is a project Johnson has spent years helping to bring to fruition. “What’s critical is the investment in more superhero characters of color, and Black Adam is one of them,” he said. “It was extremely important to me and one of the reasons why I was not letting go.” To read more of the culture reporter Dave Itzkoff’s interview with therock, tap the link in our bio.
