A Russian court rejected U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner’s appeal against her nine-year prison sentence on drug charges Tuesday. The WNBA star has been imprisoned since her Feb. 17 arrest on charges of entering Russia with vape cartridges, which her lawyers said were prescribed to her as part of treatment for chronic pain and other conditions. Meanwhile, Russia apparently intends to raise at the U.N. Security Council its unfounded accusation that Ukraine is planning to use a “dirty bomb” — an explosive weapon designed to scatter radioactive material — on its own soil. Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya, in a letter to the council that was seen by Reuters, urged Western nations “to exert their influence” on Kyiv to prevent what he called a potential “act of nuclear terrorism.” The United States and other Western powers have dismissed Russia’s claim as “transparently false.” Read more through the link in our bio.

Florida’s governor upended the national debate over the record number of arrests on the southern border by flying newly arrived migrants last month to liberal-leaning Massachusetts, ostensibly to prevent them from burdening his state with the cost of their education and health care. But after Hurricane Ian inflicted billions of dollars in damage, undocumented workers came to the Sunshine State to rebuild, joining tens of thousands of others who were already here — and who construction managers say are sorely needed. Their arrival puts the Republican strongholds that weathered the worst of the storm in an awkward position as they attempt to recover: With low unemployment, a shortage of construction workers and an above-average elderly population, can Florida rebuild without them? 🔍️ How far-right Italy became an economic time bomb Italy is among the EU economies most reliant on Russian gas and faces one of the deepest recessions. ➡️ Before the invasion of Ukraine, 40pc of the country’s supply was imported from Russia. Surging gas prices and collapsing supply in the wake of the war have put huge pressure on Italian businesses, especially those in energy-intensive sectors such as construction. Rampant gas and electricity prices are fuelling inflation, which hit 9.4pc last month in Italy and is undermining the country's industrial base. 📊 See more at the link in bio
