NASA’s Curiosity Rover Discovers Opal-Gemstone On Mars
NASA's Curiosity, a rover operating on Mars since 2012, provided data able to independently verify that fractures in the bedrock contained opal, on Earth a gemstone formed by the alteration of silica by water. opal is an amorphous mineral consisting of layers of microscopic silica-spherules with water filling the gaps between them. Light is scattered along the surface of the spherules, giving common opal colors ranging from white to yellow to red. On Earth, silica falls out of solution in places like lake and ocean bottoms and can form in hot springs and geysers, somewhat similar to the environments at Yellowstone National Park.

On an Extensive Late Hydrologic Event in Gale Crater as Indicated by Water-Rich Fracture Halos: Journal of Geophysical Research: PlanetsVolume 127, Issue 12
Light-toned opaline silica features found throughout rocks along Curiosity rover's traverse are the exposed roots of a vast fluid event in recent Martian geologic history. Using data collected from several instruments on Curiosity rover, we find evidence that the event was short lived and was followed by consistently cold and dry Mars climate conditions. This water-rich subsurface network was shielded from modern harsh surface conditions, allowing for a potentially habitable environment on Mars.

Had the opportunity to go on sightseeing flight over the area and learned about Yerkes Observatory. I want to go back for the full tour. Learning now from Wikipedia about it's discoveries.
