A customer brought in this 30-year-old Teleflora keepsake to her local Teleflora florist, Expression Florist & Greenhouses in Greensburg, IN, kept from way back when her son was born. Last fall I collected a bunch of dahlia seed which we’re growing out this year in the hopes of discovering some new varieties. Dahlias can easily be grown from seed and that’s how new varieties are born. Once you have a variety you love, it can be reproduced (cloned) by taking cuttings or dividing and replanting the tubers. I wrote a whole chapter about it in Discovering Dahlias starting on page 98. I’m especially excited to see what come out of the seedlings collected from Floret! Swipe through to see a picture of her. Dahlias from seed are such a crap shoot (in a good and exciting way) when it comes to what you will get so I always plant a lot in hopes that it’ll give me more chances of discovering something special. I think there are about 1,000 Floret seedlings that have been started, so hopefully a few might have some of their mothers beautiful traits. #discoveringdahlias
