Take it from astrophysicist and TEDFellow Jedidah Isler (jedidahislerphd), the first Black woman to earn a PhD in astrophysics from Yale University. Her journey was filled with difficulties, roadblocks and biases that could have driven her to choose another path. But she persisted, and now she's trying to help other women build careers in STEM fields. Itā€™s time for #MineralMonday! Pictured is a specimen of the tin ore cassiterite. Ancient Greek writers claimed the tin, which was used for toolmaking, came from the Cassiterides or ā€œTin Islandsā€ā€”islands supposedly off the coast of Iberia (now Spain and Portugal). No such islands actually exist, but itā€™s likely the tin did come from far western Europe. Scientists are working to identify the source of tin used in ancient Greek bronze artifacts. How? The tin ore mineral cassiterite has slightly different ratios on tin isotopes depending on its source, and researchers may eventually be able to match the isotope ratios in ores! Photo: E.
