Chien-Shiung Wu was a Chinese-American physicist who helped upend what scientists thought they knew about particle physics. Most notably, Wu designed experiments that showed a key law of physics, the conservation of parity, didn't always hold true, which helped pave the way for the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Her discovery led to her colleagues, who devised the theory that Wu's experiments tested, winning the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957. Unfortunately, Wu’s contributions went unrecognized by the Nobel Prizes (though she would go on to be nominated for the Nobel Prize several times in later years for her subsequent work in the field). Wu did, however, receive many other awards throughout her life and became president of the American Physical Society, an organization focused on advancing and spreading the knowledge of physics through research and education.
