When C.W. Hamilton took out his first student loan in 1977, the Education Department wasn’t even a federal agency. The $5,250 he borrowed to complete an associate’s degree at Cochise College in Arizona was supposed to be an investment in his future, not a lifelong burden. Yet after more than 40 years of payments and bouts of default, Hamilton still owes almost as much as he first borrowed. “It’s like an anchor around my neck,” said Hamilton, a 72-year-old Army veteran in Reno, Nev. “I live on peanuts. ... I can never get from underneath this debt.” Read more through the link in our bio.

As The Telegraph’s Agony Uncle, ichardmadeleyofficial weighs in on your dilemmas – the good, the bad and the ugly Dear Richard, My problem is an intimate and delicate one. My partner’s penis is very small, and I’m quite tubby, so our love-making has always been a bit of a non-event – just achieving penetration is tricky. He’s not really one for foreplay, either. I fear the sexual incompatibility between us is just a matter of “engineering” and won’t be fixable – but obviously that’s not my partner’s fault. Everything else about the relationship is fine. We have been together for six years, and we’re both in our 60s. Should I accept this loving but essentially sexless relationship, look for extracurricular solutions or move on to pastures new? — Anon, via email Read Richard's response by following the Linkinbio

The artist Max Colson uses a 3D scanner to document how some of the capital’s most expensive homes have been ‘haunted’ by offshore companies. These ghost houses is not some animation of an Edgar Allan Poe story, but a 3D scan that is part of a documentary project created by the photographer and artist Max Colson. Colson, 37, who lectures in photography and documentary techniques at Central Saint Martins and London College of Communication, has scanned hundreds of London properties owned by offshore companies to document the way that the capital has been “haunted” by these investments. The resulting project is called Offshore Capital. 🔗 Click the link in bio for the full story

A life-changing condition called POTS, which can cause fainting, irregular heartbeats and dizziness, particularly among young women, appears to be on the rise as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. But the condition isn’t well understood, and many patients are dismissed as having anxiety, delaying diagnosis. Once diagnosed, many patients face waiting lists as long as two years to get treatment from specialists. Lauren Stiles, president and chief executive of Dysautonomia International, a nonprofit advocacy group, estimates that the number of people with POTS has at least doubled since the start of the pandemic, while the number of specialists has remained the same and waiting lists are getting longer. "Hancock’s messages on testing imply that he was more driven by publicity, and what would make him look good ..." Matt Hancock is facing a series of claims based on a leaked cache of more than 100,000 WhatsApp messages that provide an insight into the way the UK government operated at the height of the coronavirus pandemic. They include the suggestion that, while health secretary, he rejected advice from England’s chief medical officer, Prof Sir Chris Whitty, to test everyone going into care homes in England for Covid-19. Hancock vehemently denies overruling clinical advice. A spokesperson called the claim “categorically untrue”. Swipe to read part of Professor Devi Sridhar’s (profdevisridhar) latest column on her key takeaways from the messages – and tap the link in bio to read the piece in full, as well as our newest explainer guide. •Prof Devi Sridhar is chair of global public health at the University of Edinburgh #matthancock #coronavirus #pandemic #tories #ukgovernment

🇺🇦🇷🇺 Russia’s faltering offensive is getting bogged down in the mud as the “rasputitsa” spring thaw comes early to Ukraine. The scenes around the Donetsk city of Bakhmut show roads turned into rivers and carefully cut trenches now full of knee-deep mud. "The early part of the spring and thwarting ground will make life more difficult for the Russian attacks, especially those on foot, as heavy mud will slow them," Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a former commander of the 1st Royal Tank Regiment, said. 🔴 It will particularly hinder Russian efforts in Bakhmut. Moscow's fleet of tanks are particularly susceptible to boggy conditions because of their low-ground clearance. More than a year ago, US intelligence officers reported that Vladimir Putin even delayed his initial invasion plans to wait for the ground to freeze. 🔗 Read more at the link in our bio. #ukraine #bakhmut #ukrainewar #putin #donetsk #worldnews

postopinions’s Global Opinions contributing columnist León Krauze writes: Earlier this month, Nayib Bukele, president of El Salvador, unveiled his latest infrastructure project: a massive, “first-world” jail that could well become the largest penitentiary in the world, with an alleged capacity to hold 40,000 inmates. This weekend, he announced the transfer of the first 2,000 prisoners to the new facility. “A common-sense project,” Bukele called it. “The reality is that the scale of the project defies common sense — and easy comprehension. And the social implications of the endeavor are no less striking. The citizens of El Salvador have tacitly accepted Bukele’s unprecedented crackdown on crime, and, for the time anyway, are ignoring its broader ramifications. The Greek stationmaster who oversaw the head-on collision of two trains appeared before a local prosecutor today and is expected to be charged on Saturday with multiple counts of manslaughter, after he was accused of “pressing the wrong button” then failing to stop the disaster. One official said the mistake was entirely attributable to the negligence of the station chief, who took the job three months ago. “When he switched the incoming train to the same line as the freight train, I asked him, ‘What have you done?’ He understood his mistake. But by then it was too late. It was clearly his mistake. You don’t just press a button and leave it,” he said, declining to give his name, on the Antenna television network. 🔗 Read the full story via our link in bio

MI5 missed a “significant opportunity” to stop the Manchester Arena bomber when spies did not act on intelligence indicating terrorist activity, an official inquiry has concluded. The vital information could have led to Salman Abedi being stopped and interrogated when he returned from Libya just four days before the attack on May 22, 2017, a senior judge concluded. 🔗Click the link in bio for the full story 🎥 timesradio
