It's been a surreal year for travel as the Covid-19 pandemic brought aviation to a halt and tourist destinations became ghost towns. Swipe through for some of the year’s defining photos. For many, images of Italy's lockdown, like this shot of Milan's Piazza Duomo, served as a glimpse of the future. Qantas airplanes were parked at Sydney Airport last April as stay-at-home orders were issued and travel came to a halt. When Qantas announced plans to run a sightseeing "flight to nowhere" last October, tickets sold out in under 10 minutes. The flight thrilled Aussies who were barred from leaving the country for vacation. One of the world’s top tourist destinations, the archaeological marvel Machu Picchu in Peru, was closed for months during the pandemic. The Inca citadel reopened late last year with new restrictive measures in place. (📸: Piero Cruciatti/AFP/Getty Images/Cameron Spencer/Getty Images/James D. The staffers were fired weeks after the Biden administration said it would loosen these policies in an effort to modernize and expand the pool of people who can work there. Now, many local and national advocates for marijuana legalization are denouncing the White House’s actions. “Just look at the fact that three of the five last presidents have admitted to past cannabis use, including Biden’s former boss,” said Morgan Fox, a spokesperson for the National Cannabis Industry Association.
