Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Thursday that the Justice Department has filed a motion for a judge to unseal the court-authorized warrant that led FBI agents to search the Florida residence of former President Donald Trump. Garland said he personally authorized the request for a search warrant and decided to file the motion to unseal since Trump had confirmed to the public that the FBI raided his property. The statement Thursday marks Garland’s first public appearance or comment since agents executed the warrant at Mar-A-Lago resort, taking about a dozen boxes of material after opening a safe and entering a padlocked storage area. After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June, more than a dozen states moved quickly to ban abortion, enacting trigger laws designed to take effect in the event Roe was overturned or reinstating old laws that were previously unenforceable. But lawsuits against the abortion bans followed just as quickly. Plaintiffs have argued that the bans run afoul of state constitutions, or are too vague or out of date to enforce. And judges in several states have agreed: Bans have been temporarily blocked, reinstated and, in some cases, blocked again, as the cases have wound their way through the courts. For abortion providers and patients, this has meant navigating a situation in which abortion may be allowed one day and banned the next. Providers have canceled procedures midday or told patients to wait on standby in the event that abortion becomes temporarily legal again. Read the full report at the link in our bio.

Just before 1 p.m. on Wednesday, residents of a neighborhood in Evansville, Ind., heard and felt an earth-shattering rumble. A house in the center of the city of about 116,000 had exploded, sending debris 100 feet in each direction. At least three people were killed, and one was injured, officials said. Thirty-nine houses were damaged in the blast. Authorities have not determined the cause of the explosion, which occurred on the 1000 block of North Weinbach Avenue, Evansville Fire Chief Mike Connelly told reporters at the scene on Wednesday afternoon. He said the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was conducting a “blast analysis” at the site, temporarily halting a search for possible missing residents. Officials have not publicly identified the victims. Read more through the link in our bio.

The United States is returning 30 “looted antiquities” to Cambodia, among them Buddhist and Hindu religious statues and ancient artifacts, officials in New York said. In a repatriation ceremony on Monday, Damian Williams, attorney for the Southern District of New York, and Ricky J. Patel, acting special agent in charge of homeland security investigations, handed over the intricate artifacts to the Cambodian ambassador to the United States, Keo Chhea. The envoy said they would be “cherished” and returned to the Southeast Asian nation from which they were stolen. The items include artifacts from the Bronze Age to the 12th century, the attorney’s office said in a statement. Notable pieces being repatriated include a 10th-century sandstone sculpture of the Hindu god of war Skanda riding on a peacock and a monumental sculpture of Ganesha, a central Hindu and Buddhist deity; both were looted from the ancient Khmer capital, Koh Ker. In his new album, the Mumford & Sons frontman finally faces up to his childhood trauma, the sexual abuse he suffered aged 6. In an interview with The Times he talks about the day he told his mum, new beginnings and forgiveness. His song Cannibal, his first song away from his band, has haunting lyrics about flesh and tastes that linger. “That wasn’t a choice in the mind of a child and you knew it,” it goes. He wishes that his abuser had “done it in the dark”. He hopes their memory is less vivid than his. He wonders why they did it. 🔗 Read the full interview by following the link in our bio
