Ian made landfall in southwest Florida on Wednesday afternoon as a high-end Category 4 hurricane with winds of 150 mph, making it tied as the 5th strongest hurricane on record to strike the United States. The National Hurricane Center warned that “catastrophic storm surge, winds, and flooding” would continue as the storm moved inland. The severe storm surge was inundating coastal communities in southwest Florida, while water was receding around Tampa Bay. More than half a million customers were without power in the afternoon as conditions continued to deteriorate. Even before landfall, emergency preparedness officials were warning of a “very long road.” “This is going to be a nasty, nasty day,” Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said in a news conference early Wednesday. Simon Hoare, the Tory chairman of the Northern Ireland select committee, wrote on Twitter: "In the words of Norman Lamont on Black Wednesday: 'Today has been a very difficult day'. "These are not circumstances beyond the control of the Government or the Treasury. They were authored there. This inept madness cannot go on." The Bank of England was forced to intervene on Wednesday morning in an attempt to avert a pension crisis. 🔗 Read more at the link in our bio.
