Is it just me? Stop calling people’s toddler daughter your son’s gf!!!

I find this extremely annoying and almost cringe-worthy. I am friends with a lady on Facebook, every few days, it appears she gets together with other young parents to have her toddler son play with other toddler kids. Every time a girl shows up to play with her son, she posts on FB with captions such as, “ meet Evan’s new girl friend!!” And every time it is a boy, it is a more timid caption such as , “meet Evan’s new buddy!”. I just hate it, and almost find her social media routine bothersome. She has been asking us to meet up with our young ones, and I have been avoiding. I just am not a fan to have someone put my kids’ pictures with dumb captions on social media. Is it just me?

Is having a newborn really as miserable as everyone makes it out to be?

I’m a first time mom due in November and everyone just keeps telling me how absolutely horrible, miserable, and hellish my life is going to be once my child is born. I obviously understand sleep deprivation and the baby needs to be looked after constantly, but is it really the living hell everyone makes it out to be? That I’ll have absolutely no life, thoughts, or moments to breathe outside of caring for the baby every single second of the day? My life is over, I’ll be miserable, it’s the worst thing I’ll ever go through, etc. When planning kids, I was more terrified of the middle school years than anything else. Now I’m questioning everything.

Introducing /r/OldManDad

In case anyone is interested, I've started an [**r/OldManDad**](https://www.reddit.com/r/oldmandad/) subreddit (yes, named after [r/OldManDog](https://www.reddit.com/r/OldManDog/)) for 35+ fathers, and particularly, older first time fathers. There are definitely unique challenges for older dads (physical, existential, etc.), and demographic trends show that people are starting to have children later and later. If you want to talk about those issues together, come on by and say hello!

Kids toys playing new songs randomly

Ok this has been driving me crazy for a while now. I can't find anything about this while googling. A couple of my children's toys which we have had for 3-4 years have started playing new tunes out of the blue. Tunes which my husband and I are absolutely certain we've never heard. Both toys I'm thinking of are made by Vtech. One is a potty and the other is an activity center. You know how these toys play little tunes when you press buttons? So yeah, these things have both played a totally brand new song. Anyone else experience this? Please tell me it's not just us and we're crazy. Before anyone asks, yes we have carbon monoxide detectors in our home lol. Maybe it's just sleep deprivation.

Cautionary tale of cancel culture

I live in a very liberal area of the US where ‘cancel culture’ is predominant. I am not going to get in to if it’s good or bad. But here is my issue. My almost 15 year old asked me last night what the KKK was. She literally had no idea. She ‘knew’ that it was a bad group but that was it. No knowledge of the history, actions or demise of the group. How can 13 years of private and public schooling and literally never been taught about this issue? How can her generation learn if we pretend it simply didn’t exist? Btw. Super proud that she asked me instead of googling.

3 year old doesn’t want to potty train

Hey yall. I have a 3 year old son (turned 3 in March) who has NO interest in potty training. I have tried just about everything I can think of. I let him watch me go to the bathroom, i show him how to use the toilet, tell him if he uses the potty he can get a candy or sticker, I have given him my phone to sit on the toilet but he won’t sit there. I don’t know what to do. If I even mention the potty now he’ll start to throw a tantrum. He won’t sit on the toilet longer than a minute. He doesn’t pee during the night. He tells me when he pees or poops. All signs he’s ready for potty training, right? Why does he refuse to use the potty? I feel ashamed because my niece who just turned 2 has used her potty twice already. I need help.

Should baby have blankie?

Our sweet 14 month old girl has never really been into pacifiers/blankies/teddies and all that. She loooves the boobies and has had free access since birth so I have a theory that she doesn’t need it really. She uses a little blankie when she naps in her stroller at kindergarten because we wanted to try it. However she never signals that she wants or needs ut. Should we try to offer more at home or at bed time?

$2000 to get my childs two teeth capped

So I have a 3 year old and they want to do a surgery on her to cap her 2 teeth. She nursed at night until she was 2 1/2 and we suspect this is why she has these cavities as we have a good teeth brushing routine. They called today saying after our insurance we will owe $2000 up front for the surgery. Is this normal to cap 2 teeth? I’m a little stressed at the moment because we definitely weren’t prepared for this amount and to be told to cough it up in less than 2 weeks 🙁

So, yes, it makes sense to take parenting seriously, and to want to make the best choices for your kid and the best choices for you. But there will be many times that you need to just trust that if you’re doing your best, that’s all you can do. -@profemilyoster #parenting #kids
