Awe is what we feel when we encounter something vast, wondrous or beyond our ordinary frame of reference. And, given its documented benefits, awe might be our most overlooked, undervalued emotion. @dfkris @washingtonpost @onparenting https://t.co/MPB5yiDB2W

Pretty sure our nanny saw our daughter take her first steps.

Today we excitedly showed our nanny our 1 year old walking when she came in. Our nanny, bless her, is a terrible actress. She tried to be excited but I could tell she’s seen this before. Then it was confirmed when our daughter looked at her and said “ready” and they did a little set up where the nanny backed up and she walked to her, again, it was very clear that they’ve done this before lol With my first, I would’ve absolutely died if anyone saw her first steps but she’s #2 and I’m not as crushed as I expected to be lol

Some teachers may avoid computer science and #HourofCode because they don’t want to lose their class’s instructional focus and rigor. Others struggle to understand where to begin teaching CS. @edutopia @JorgeDoesPBL https://t.co/2goKb90jye

How caregivers can promote children's kindness

https://preview.redd.it/btn5a2l4ny281.png?width=1700&format=png&auto=webp&s=398cb3c42cd1c612c974f28a06589e236ff10c1d I'm a Developmental Psychologist who studies children's moral development. This summer, my team and I at the University of Toronto put together an infographic on how caregivers can promote children's kindness. We've included a set of scientifically-based techniques with all the references included at the bottom for anyone interested.

Parents who used sperm donors, when/how did you tell your kid(s)?

Lesbian mom of 5 year old twins here. My wife and I are discussing when to tell our kids that they have a sperm donor (anonymous but willing to be known one). Curious to hear how other families have approached this topic as there are so many paths to take. I feel like the longer we take, the bigger of a deal it will be to the kids. I am kind of regretting that we didn't talk about this from the beginning so that it was just ingrained knowledge with no big revelation moment...

How important is floor tummy time?

Am I messing my baby up if I rarely do floor tummy time? He’s 10 weeks old and gets lots of tummy time on our chests, I baby wear him a lot, and he gets floor time on his back. He seems to have great neck control. We never swaddled so he’s had lots of free unrestricted movement. He just hated tummy time so we did alternatives at first, and it’s like, suddenly he’s 10 weeks old and I’m like HOW is he 10 weeks old already and HOW have we barely done floor tummy time?! It just seemed so hard to incorporate when he was barely awake at first and would spit up on his tummy. He’s such a happy baby, but diaper changes and tummy time on the floor are like torture to him, or he just lays there with his head down. On our chests he loves to look at us, look around. On the floor, he does it for 5 seconds then lays down and/or cries. What is the appropriate amount anyway? Is it too late to start?

5 year old vomits when he sees food he thinks is gross.

My wife is currently on her way to pick up our son from kindergarten because he threw up at lunch. This is the second time this school year. When asked about it he’ll say “I saw some food that was gross”. I didn’t fully believe this was the explanation until I saw it for myself on thanksgiving. He saw some baked brie and immediately vomited on the floor. He’s always fine afterwards. Anyone experienced something like this? We’re planning on taking him to his doctor but we’re currently at a loss for words.

My 3 year old refuses to sleep in their bed instead sleeps on the floor in their doorway.

About a month ago I wake up to find my 3 year old has moved their pillow and duvet to their doorway and is snuggled up asleep on the floor. He flat out refuses to sleep in his bed anymore, screaming crying etc. When I put him into bed when he's already asleep, if he wakes in the night he simply relocates to the doorway floor. I'm not worried about him, he seems perfectly comfortable and quite cosy (he's between the door and a wall with a shelving unit on the other side and his stair gate. I'm guessing this will be a phase that'll pass

Nanny Question

I am a first time mom, 1 year old boy, and my husband and I both work full time. We are both working remotely and each have an office space in our house. We have a nanny weekdays 9-5 because even though we are home we are both working. We are both in meetings a good part of the day, but check on/play with our son as much as we can. When my son naps, our nanny goes outside and sits in her car. She takes the baby monitor with her, but it really bothers me. She’s far away if my son needs anything or if there’s an emergency. Nothing has happened so far, but it really stresses me out. Is this normal and I am overreacting? Am I the only one that thinks this is weird and unprofessional?
