Cosmic latte art These milky swirls on Jupiter’s North Temperate Belt aren’t made by a barista, but by the planet’s zonal winds that flow in opposite directions. The resulting storms created in Jupiter’s atmosphere might look small in this picture, but they may actually be 16 to 31 miles (25 to 50 kilometers) across. Our Juno spacecraft captured this view on Oct. 16, 2021, on its 37th close flyby of this giant planet. Juno is a solar-powered spacecraft that spans the width of a basketball court and makes long, looping orbits around Jupiter. The winds on the planet create beige, orange, and brown swirls that look like milk poured in coffee.
