Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter was the second American to orbit the Earth. He served as an aquanaut, spending 30 days in 1965 living and working in a sea-floor habitat 205 feet below the surface. Carpenter was born today in 1925. https://t.co/rNTh97HiBx

#HappyBirthday to NASA Project Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter, the fourth American in space. He has the unique distinction of being the first human ever to travel to both outer space and to the ocean depths as an aquanaut. https://t.co/SywonNv6Ae

šŸŒ Calling all moongazers! Mark your calendars for the next total lunar eclipse, visible in the Western Hemisphere on May 15-16. Two great planet-spotting opportunities begin and end the month, and clear skies (plus binoculars) may allow you to see the Coma star cluster. When & where to look up:

In twilight Monday evening, the thin crescent Moon aims its round limb diagonally almost toward Mercury and the subtler Pleiades. Binoculars help in twilight. Although it's May now, wintry Sirius still twinkles very low in the west-southwest in twilight. https://t.co/hpiW6MxY23 https://t.co/cDlmsju7P9

The Douglas SBD Dauntless was one of the truly great aircraft of World War II. It played a major role throughout the Pacific, and today in 1940 it flew for the first time. More on the SBD Dauntless in our collection: https://t.co/qVPdFMp1C5 https://t.co/9YjgjusFW6

Small grandma update :)

I showed her some of the thank you and LLAP comments, she really appreciates it and was so happy to see people thinking about her. She wanted me to make a post to thank everyone for thanking her lol! I havenā€™t told her about the birthday surprise yet, but Iā€™m really excited for mail to start getting here and to see her reaction on her birthday. Iā€™ll update this sub again then. Thank you guys for bringing her some much needed joy! She also wants me to tell everyone being at NASA was still the most fun job she ever had. (And she worked for almost 80 years of her life)

Saturn's shadow stretched beyond the edge of its rings for many years after Cassini first arrived at Saturn, casting an ever-lengthening shadow that reached its maximum extent at the planet's 2009 equinox.

Kind of a stupid question

So I have been wondering this for such a long time but could never come to an answer. If an astronaut on the ISS were to have wifi through NASA and opens up a GPS map on their phone, what would happen?

Spotlighted in this blog is the Lockheed U-2, one of the most successful intelligence-gathering aircraft. More on this high-flying spy plane, including a diplomatic incident that occurred #OTD in 1960, resulting in halted flights of the U-2: https://t.co/XPQdtScXGQ https://t.co/yYPsMSNWif
