Starting #OTD in 1994, Hubble captured an extraordinary event on Jupiter! Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 broke into large pieces and rained down upon the planet’s clouds, creating visible impact scars. This was the first time astronomers witnessed such an event: https://t.co/jFivl06hRn https://t.co/Pvz6LUT1cR

The solar system is the collection of planets and their moons in orbit around the sun, together with smaller bodies in the form of asteroids, meteroids, and comets. Our planety system is the only one that is officially called the solar system. There are a total of 8 planets in our solar system, along with 9 dwarf planets, over 200 moons, over 1 million asteroids (most of them located in the main asteroid belt) over 50,000 meteroids, and over 3,700 comets. There is, however, only one star in the solar system that we know of - the sun. The solar system formed about 4.6 billion years ago, when a cloud of gas and dust called the solar nebula collapsed, probably due to a shock wave from a nearby supernova explosion. The diameter of the solar system is about 287.46 billion kilometers or 1,921.56 astronomical units. The solar systems shape can be described as an Ellipse, or a plane curve surrounding two focal points.
