Every time ‘AI Ethics’ comes up, I tell people about the UK post office database scandal. Hundreds of lives ruined by an institution that could not accept there were bugs in the code, and that was 30-year-old technology built by an IT outsourcer. Was that ‘database ethics?’

Code can be buggy, data can be skewed, and the computer can be wrong. Both the last and new waves of AI bring new ways for the computer to be wrong but the solution is probably the same - institutional awareness that the computer could be wrong and the processes to deal with that
