A scheduled tweet went up earlier with an insensitive quote relating to violent crime. This was a careless oversight on our part and we're very sorry for any offence or distress caused.

10 years ago, a powerful earthquake struck off Japan's northeast coast, resulting in a tsunami that devastated coastal communities. Among them was the fishing town of Otsuchi, which lost nearly 10% of its population. A year and a half later, Argentine photographer Alejandro Chaskielberg (alejandrochaskielberg) decided to document and explore the event's physical and emotional effects, such as the loss of photo albums and homes and their accompanying memories. In this image, a family posed in the remaining foundation of their destroyed house. Due to the long exposure time used to capture the image, they had to be completely silent and still for 10 minutes at a time. It felt like "a spiritual moment," says Chaskielberg. To learn more about his project and see more of his haunting images, head to the link in our bio. [Image: alejandrochaskielberg]

In the 1920s, undergraduates at Oxford played a game called ‘Beaver’ where, if you spotted a bearded man and were the first to shout ‘Beaver’, you received points. If you spotted a man with a red beard, a ‘King Beaver’, you won the game.
