Soaring in an ultralight aerial trike over Caliente peak sitting near the western border of the San Andreas Fault ushers in unprecedented views of purple phacelia, hillside daisies, California poppies, & yellow goldfields scattered around the Carrizo Plain National Monument during an assignment for natgeo Significant rainfall from last winter set the stage for the wildflowers (known as winter annuals) to bloom, absorbing water from the historically desolate surface. Although photographing the landscape from the air provides some of the most dramatic and encapsulating angles, the task of shooting from an aircraft presents sometimes simple challenges such as cold temperatures, shifts in the wind, and proper timing with the other pilots.
