The Taliban have ruled Afghanistan for a year. After barring girls from high school — and harboring a Qaeda leader — the regime now risks jeopardizing the billions of dollars of global aid that keeps Afghans alive. For two decades, the U.S. and its allies spent lavishly in Afghanistan on schools, hospitals and roads in support of the nation-building project that grew out of the U.S. invasion. Now, crippled by sanctions and the sudden cutoff of development aid, Afghanistan’s economy is on the verge of collapse. In this week’s nytmag cover story, mattaikins reported on Afghanistan's fraught relationship with Western aid and the photographer kianahayeri returned to the country for the first time since documenting the collapse of the republic last summer. Surf’s up, dawg! This past weekend at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica, California, a variety of dogs and their owners gathered for the World Dog Surfing Championships. Owners often dress their dogs in beach-appropriate fits, including sunglasses, costumes, and doggy-size life jackets. The dogs are judged on some of the same proficiency categories as a human surfing competition, from technique to the length of the ride. Dog surfing is said to have started in the 1920s, but it was first recorded circa 1932 in the silent film On the Waves at Waikiki. The annual competition has been held on the California coast since 2016, and it is one of several such contests established around the world. In the three months that the 93rd Mechanized Brigade (93_brygada) has been posted near the Russian-occupied city of Izyum, Ukrainian soldiers have destroyed 18 enemy tanks. Five of those vehicles were taken as “trophies” that the soldiers repaired, repainted and redeployed to the front line. The Post’s Isabelle Khurshudyan (ikhurshudyan) and senior video journalist Whitney Leaming (whitneyleaming) saw one of these recycled Russian tanks firsthand. Take a look.

Floods Kill at Least 9 in Seoul Area Some of the heaviest rainfall in decades struck the Seoul area overnight, flooding homes, streets and subway stations, and killing at least nine people, South Korean officials said on Tuesday. In addition to the nine confirmed deaths, officials said six people were missing after floodwaters pulled them into manholes, underground passages or streams. Nearly 17 inches of rain poured down in southern Seoul between early Monday and early Tuesday, roughly the same amount that falls in a typical summer month, weather officials said. In one district, 5.4 inches fell in a single hour, breaking an 80-year-old Seoul record. Read more at the link in our bio.

It goes without saying that throughout the history of the world, there have always been people whose ideas and voices are given more weight and authority than others. That happens because of many things — war, patriarchy, economic status. Who’s at the top of the heap? Who’s at the bottom? The answer to that question is rarely fair. There can be no mistaking the message that photographer Justine Kurland is sending with her latest book, “Scumb Manifesto” (Mack, 2022). That’s because she lays it all out on the cover, in bold all-caps letters. “Scumb Manifesto” is a series of collages that Kurland made from her personal library of photobooks. In fact, she purged her photo book collection in the act of making this work. She cut up the work of 150 straight white men who have monopolized the photographic canon. In a vulnerable first-person essay for Vogue, the 23-time Grand Slam champion opened up about how she may retire after the upcoming US Open and how personally difficult this transition is for her, but said she's "ready for what’s next." After she retires, Williams said she would like to focus more on her family and have another baby. "If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family," she wrote. "Maybe I’d be more of a Tom Brady if I had that opportunity." Tap the link in our bio for more. (📸 Julian Finney / Getty Images)
