Small, banana-shaped “pingers” are being used in Indonesia’s Mahakam River to protect freshwater dolphins from getting caught in fishing nets. These devices emit a pulsing noise that annoys dolphins, discouraging them from trying to snatch fish from the nets and decreasing the chance they might get tangled. Pingers benefit fishers’ livelihoods as well as dolphins. A six-month study revealed that fishers who used the devices saw a 40% increase in their daily catch and a 100% decrease in dolphins caught in their nets!
