A strong earthquake hit the northern Philippines on Wednesday morning, killing at least four people, causing dozens of landslides and severely damaging buildings, officials said. The 7.0 magnitude quake struck at 8:43 a.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers, or six miles, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. The quake’s epicenter was in Luzon, the Philippines’ most populous island, but in its northwest, where comparatively few people live. By midafternoon, four people were known to have been killed, said Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. Officials said the quake had caused at least 50 landslides. Some remote areas had not yet been reached, and it was possible that more deaths would be reported. This is a developing story. Follow updates at the link in our bio.

The House Oversight Committee on Wednesday questioned executives of gun manufacturers about their response to gun violence. Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) asked one of the executives, Christopher Killoy of Sturm, Ruger & Co., why firearms aren’t equipped with fingerprint scanners. After demonstrating the fingerprint scanner on her cellphone, the congresswoman asked, “Why should this device require more steps to operate than your company’s firearms, which have been used in accidental shootings, mass shootings and homicides?” “Congresswoman, respectfully, your cell phone doesn't generate internal pressures of upwards of 60,000 pounds per square inch,” Killoy responded, adding that firearm operating systems are “extremely dynamic” with “lots of moving pieces.” Porter proceeded to ask Killoy if Sturm, Ruger & Co. would commit to adding fingerprint scanners to all their firearms. “No, congresswoman. We will not,” Killoy said.

The Federal Reserve hiked interest rates by three-quarters of a percentage point on Wednesday, as expected, in the latest push to tame inflation, stabilize the economy and ease the pressure on families and businesses nationwide. The Fed’s most important tool for controlling inflation is its interest rate, which the central bank raises or lowers depending on what is happening in the economy. Higher rates are a ticket to an economic slowdown, because they make a host of lending — including mortgages and business loans — more expensive. Here are some of the biggest economic forces guiding how Fed policymakers are thinking about what to do about the economy. Read more through the link in our bio.

From bytheway: Inside a terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, thousands of passengers a week are finding their way to gates using technology that looks like something out of a futuristic sci-fi movie. Delta Air Lines recently introduced a “Parallel Reality” system that lets travelers access individual flight information on a shared overhead screen based on a scan of their boarding pass — or their face. The twist is that 100 people can do this at a time, all using the same digital screen but only seeing their own personal details. Unlike a regular TV or video wall, in which each pixel would emit the same color of light in every direction, the board sends different colors of light in different directions. Air pollution link to dementia is officially backed Air pollution is a “likely” cause of dementia, government advisers have said after a landmark study supported the theory. Toxic emissions are a well-known risk factor for heart and lung diseases but it has also been argued that particles from vehicles lead to negative health effects beyond those conditions. A panel of government experts, the Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants, has given the first official recognition that air pollution damages the brain. Their report states: “There is evidence that air pollution, particularly particulate air pollution, increases the risk of cardiovascular, including cerebrovascular, disease. These diseases are known to have adverse effects on cognitive function. It is therefore our view that there is likely to be a causal association between particulate air pollution and effects on cognitive function in older people.” 🔗 Read the full story via link in bio
